5 Common Misconceptions About Money

By Jerin Jacob (Author of Your Epic Year)

Almost 80% of the people around the world are middle class and poor. Each of them dreams to be on the other 20% of people who are rich or super wealthy.

Without any doubt, your parents love you unconditionally like no one does. But unknowingly and unintentionally they might have passed down you some misconceptions about money which they have learnt from their own parents or grandparents. Love your parents but dare to grow up to learn the truths about money which might have been kept as secrets for ages.

It’s not the hard work but the commitment to train your brain for money does create wealth. Enlisted below are some common money myths:

1. Money is evil

No, money is not evil, the people using it for evil purpose are. In reality the lack of money is the cause of all evil. The robbery, the kidnapping and even the terrorism is the bi-product of lack-of-money.

2. Money doesn't grow on trees:

This means earning money is not easy as harvesting it from a tree. But recently, because of the advent of technology, people have got greater control on making money. These days, there are numerous success stories of people who have made big money by simply using their laptop and an internet connection. The opportunities are endless like never before.

3. Save money:

As the purchasing value of the money decreases (inflation) day by day saving  money would be very risky and stupid unlike ever before. Regardless of your income level you should start investing in different material and paper assets.

4. Don't give away money:

It's a common myth that we should not give money for free unless someone gives back a good service or a product. But as per the Law of Abundance the more you give the more you receive back abundantly. Give away for charity, give away bigger amounts to those who are in need, give away to church, give away for science. Give, give, give.

5 Avoid talking about money:

You should. Not only talk about it but also learn about money, that's how you understand the working of the real world. Which will help you to take informed decisions, to capitalize on opportunities. Also set your financial goals, achieve them and live your dreams.

Hope the concepts have served you. By the way do you know someone who really needs to read this? If so, go ahead and share this article with that person. Sharing is caring.

How to attract and keep the customers!

By Jerin Jacob (Author of Your Epic Year)

In case you are in business you must have already heard about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Generally people think SEO is the optimization of their websites to be found by search engines like Google / Bing. So they stuff their webpages with so called 'relevant key-words' to attract the searchers.

But do we provide value to the customers in our webpages other than stuffing the 'key-words'? What happens after the customers reach us through Google and ended up in a no-value
-land, they 'll be totally disappointed.

It's like attracting customers to a physical store by placing a beautifully designed bill-board and after that in the store they get completely ignored for 5-10 mins then someone jumps up and asking them "Do you want to buy anything?". Will they buy from there? Never!

The key is to understand our customers's heart whether it's in a physical store or in a website. While doing SEO in particular, update the content in our website which are valuable to the customers. Since SEO is a way of organic marketing, customers will come organically and will buy our services or products.

So let's optimize our webpages to satisfy the hearts-of-the-searchers instead of the search-engine's-key-words.

Why do you exist?

By Jerin Jacob
(Author of
Your Epic Year)

Have you got big dreams.. ah? and do you love films? In that case 'It's a Wonderful Life' is a film you shouldn't miss watching. It was directed by Frank Capra and it was released on 1946. Yes, it's a Black & White movie yet it can teach you powerful lessons about life and your existence. The story-line is about a person named George Bailey who had big dreams. It starts off by show casing who George Bailey was and his dream to travel around the world. He was passionate to construct great monuments across the world. But like many of us he had to give priority to his family and had to postpone all those dreams and passions to 'someday'. At one point of time, when he was about to chase his dreams. His father passed away suddenly and he had to took over his father's social enterprise which he then passionately ran and changed many lives in his town. In between he had fallen in love with his childhood friend and got married. With the support of his wife he helped poor to live a dignitary life. He lent money for the poor so that they too can afford to stand in their own feet. He built houses for the poor on a very affordable rates. Yet he never made big money. He was struggling financially and was not happy inside as he wasn't following his dreams. One day because of one of his employee's carelessness he was on a verge to face legal obligations and bankruptcy. His frustrations became at it's peak. He decided to throw away the greatest gift God had given him – Life.

Here is the twist, before he was to kill himself, an Angel appeared and introduced himself that he was his guardian Angel. George thought the Angel was some nuts. During his conversation the Angel had given him a boon that “he was never born”. George Bailey laughed at it. But after a series of circumstances he realized. He was in a new world where he was never existed. That means his friends couldn't recognize him, even his mother couldn't. The worst thing is that the people and the city were completely different. His friends had become rude. His family had no food on the table and was struggling miserably. The poor in his city was more poorer. His brother Harry died at the age of #9 itself because George hadn't been there to save him while Harry was drowning at the age of #9. Hope you got the picture right.

Later George Bailey realized that his life was wonderful and he had lived a life which touched many lives. He prayed to get back his life and the Angel did gave back his existence. Then he went back to home, there, to his surprise, all his friends, all the ones he had helped, almost everyone in the town had gathered to fight for his financial struggle. Everyone in the town put in their contribution and helped George Bailey to get rid of that bankruptcy and in turn the legalities. And finally one of his friend toasted his drink and said “to the richest man in the town” (In deed a richest man with his deeds and heart).

Key Take Away:

  1. Every life is important. Every person touches others life in big or small ways. In case you can visualize that you were never born, how would your family be? How would your friends be? How would our society or your town or your village be?

In case you see that your in-existence won't make any significant difference, don't you think it is the time to live a life which touches the people around you?

  2. Whether it's a business/profession, do it to uplift the people around you. When you leave this world, the only thing that count is not what you have received but what you have given away.

  3. It doesn't matter how many of your Dreams are fulfilled. But what matters is how you act on the opportunities God has given you. Act on them and believe God has a greater plan, you will always be blessed.

And finally, I want to tell you, it's a wonderful life because you are in it. If you weren't born, I would have lost an ever awesome person who reads and shares my posts. You are amazing! Thank you!

Short Story: Children of The Universe

By Jerin Jacob (Author of Your Epic Year)

His name was Tommy he was short-tempered but a very curious boy - who loves to ask even #1000s of stupid yet sometimes thought provoking questions. He had a friend named Janet. Even though both had the same interests, Janet was more matured and was very thoughtful.

One day, as always, they suddenly planned and set out for a bicycle ride to the beautiful valley near to their place. They rode enjoying the beautiful nature of their village. The village was known as Gratylo, by the way history of this mysterious name was unknown.

The road they travelled was't that wide and smooth. But the beauty on its two sides were spectacular. On one side of the road was lush green plants spreading down to the horizon, on the other side of the road was an almost balded green hill.

It took an hour of cycling to reach them to the destination. But they never felt the time and was riding in a meditative mood as the nature around Gratylo was so enticing.

Tommy and Janet usually travel to such beautiful places, and their visit mostly end up with questions and answers on life and universe around them. Here in this Gratylo valley, we can surely expect such discussions from this kids, as this valley is so tempting to be philosophical and to be amused about the nature.

Tommy started: “Look Janet, how awesome is this valley, still what is the point of its existence?”.

Janet said: “To bring peace into our minds and souls”.

Tommy: “ha ha... that's funny, so you are saying God has put all this effort to create this beautiful valley just to make humans like us to be at peace?, it would have been easy for him to give 'peace' as an in-built feature to mankind rather than creating this detailed yet stunning valley”.

Janet: “See Tommy, this beautiful scenery indeed was meant to make us feel joyous and peaceful but God hasn't created it”.

Tommy: “Then whom?”.

Janet: “Whatever we see and experience is nothing but our perceptions. How we interpret what we see, is important. In case someone thinks it’s created by God, so be it, in case someone thinks it’s an illusion, so be it”.

Tommy: (with sarcastic smile) “Really? ... that doesn't make any sense to me, let’s leave the topic”.

Janet didn't reply, Then the obvious happened. Silence. Janet seems to enjoy it.

But Tommy wasn't, so he had to interrupt her: “You are sometimes so boring!”.

Janet: (with a smile) “Let me jump into the valley to make you feel better, hah?”.

Tommy: “Is that a joke?”.

The time went on, they enjoyed the awesomely crafted sunset in Gratylo. As the sun descended, they rode back to their homes feeling rejuvenated. As always with lots of unanswered questions and some memorable fights between them.

After jotting down the experiences she had had in the journey, on her dairy, Janet jumped on to her bed. Before she slips into her dream she thought: "God! Am I the God, so as Tommy!"

How to Use Books to Inspire You?

By Jerin Jacob (Author of Your Epic Year)
I am confused, what to read...
Early in this journey of being alive, I was not at all interested in reading, even though I was aware about its virtues. I remember, sometime ago a friend of mine who was mentoring me about the necessity and greatness of reading. “Oh man! I don't have much time, I don't even get time to ...”, before I complete, he interrupted me and suggested to try reading just before bed-time. I tried. It worked. That was how an epic reader was born.

From that time of tasting my first book till now, I read and read when ever I could and where ever I am. Most of the time my reading comes under the category of “Reading for yourself”. You may wonder, by the way what is this “Reading for yourself” is all about?

Over the ages of my rigorous reading and watching others read, I have come to realize everyone who reads are not reading the same. Everyone has their own preferences on what to read. I have categorized the reading preferences into two – which are “Reading for yourself” and “Reading for entertainment”.

“Reading for yourself” is a kind of reading which helps to improve you as a being. When I said improvement, it can be spiritual, intellectual, physical or social. Any reading which makes you better than yesterday is “Reading for yourself”. On the surface level it looks selfish but the simple fact is that to help others become 'better', you need to become 'better' first.

On the other hand there are people who do “Reading for entertainment”. As the name itself conveys these people see reading as sheer means for fun. They use reading as an alternative for any entertainment medium like Television (they never admit though). This kind of reading involves novels or junk fiction stories or crime stories or erotic stories. I am not saying “Reading for entertainment” is bad. I would say “Reading for yourself” has greater advantages over the other one.

Latest development in neurobiology reveals that reading of a single sentence can alter your neurons in the brain significantly which in turn creates a new belief system in your mind. That means whatever you read has a greater impact in your life.

So choose to read self-help books or self-improvement books, also writings which gives you a new perspective towards life and people, like an autobiography of a great person or a non-fiction writing about your passion or even a fiction writing which inspires to follow your heart.

A simple comparison:

Reading for yourself:

Reading for entertainment:

1. Gives you new perspective towards life 1. Not necessarily, may be you can gulp the author's perspective
2. Helps to learn something new 2. Not every time, you are focusing on entertainment
3. Inspires for your dreams 3. Crime stories and such, may not inspire you unless you aspire to become a criminal
4. Messages will be direct hence time won't be lost roaming around in a story 4. You won't get direct answers; mostly you need to interpret or need to read the whole novel to get a simple answer you are seeking in life.
5. Probably it will help you to be successful,
in case you take actions on the lessons you
learn.
5. You will make the author and the publisher successful, never you.

Negative thinking people are NOT bad!

By Jerin Jacob
(Author of Your Epic Year)

“Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will” - Zig Ziglar.

Before I dive into the topic, let me ask you, which type of person are you? A positive thinking person who sees everything as an opportunity? Or a negative thinking person who sees life as a mess? Or a person who's neutral with everything, who wants to “just live, just eat and just die” type hah?

Whichever type you are – positive, negative or don't care type, is no better than any other type. If you have happened to be a positive or a neutral person, then you don't have any right to bad-mouth/tease negative thinking persons. If you do, then you don’t deserve to hold the badge of a positive thinker.

As far as negative thinking people are concerned; Are they negative from the day they were born? When they were baby kids wasn’t their smile cute and innocent? When they were kids, did they see only negative things in their toys? The point is simple. All of us born with the same qualities like innocence, positivity and curiousness. But what made people behave differently there after?

Its obvious guess, that the circumstances like the school, family, peers and life experiences scripted us to become what we are. So in case, your friend is behaving negatively, then it’s not their problem, but its the belief system which your friend has acquired from childhood to till date. Hence haunting a person by saying “the truth to their face” that they are too negative won't make any difference. Because they don't do it intentionally, it’s the way their brain is hardwired for ages.

I am not suggesting, you to shut your mouth, let them live the way he/she is. We can make a difference in their behavior with a new approach. In fact, they have “diseased thoughts”. When we split the word disease it becomes dis + ease, so you can see that their “thoughts are not at ease”. How do you treat a diseased person, treat 'em with compassion and care.

Here is a story, to make you understand, how to exactly do that.

One day when Jill's mom arrived home. She saw Jill had spilled the water from the refrigerator all over the kitchen. She got so much angry and was about to scold him. But then she decided to stay cool and seek to understand her son.
She asked “Jill! What's up? What are you doing dear?”
Jill replied “I was getting water to clean the vessels for you Mom”.
She didn't understand and asked “Why did you take water from refrigerator then?”
Jill said “The wash basin is too high for me to reach for water”.
With a smile she said “That’s a good boy. Next time, you can use a chair to get height or call me for help. Okay? By the way, now let us clean the floor”.
Jill came up with a cloth. And both of them happily cleaned the kitchen. Later, in the evening when Jill’s dad came to home, Jill ran and opened the door and he said to dad
I am a hard working good boy”.

Jill's mother could have behaved negatively, but she didn't. She appreciated his son's little efforts. And talked his flaws in a way that Jill can understand but without hurting him. That made that kid to see him as a hard working good boy.

You might say to me, “Hey Jerin, Jill is a kid and its easy to handle him positively, but it’s not the case of my colleague or my friend, they are so aggressive”. Okay, you may be right. But for both the persons – who behaves negatively and you - have got one power, which is nothing but the power of choice. Even-though the negative person had got all the negative pressures he could have made a choice to be good and to behave positively. But he hasn't, that is the reason he is still stuck in the negativity category.

In the same way, you have also got the power, to choose. To behave differently, to respond differently. When you treat them well, even-though the other person is negative, that person will change; that’s natural. But you may need little patience, initially he won't respond the way you want. But gradually he will. So when you deal with a negative person, you have got a “choice” of how to respond. And you have to be “patient” to see positive results. Use them, you will see miracles happening :)

And finally, try to help them understand and act on the following:

  1. UNDERSTAND: “Thoughts have a frequency” - this is revealed by the recent research in the quantum physics. So when your thoughts are in the negative vibrational frequency, you will attract circumstances and persons which are in the negative frequencies. It is the same way positive thought frequencies work.

  1. ACT: To keep themselves in positive frequency, they have to make a choice, to stay away from negative-thought-frequency-creating-situations like – gossiping, watching-reading-talking negative news, criticizing, arguing and fighting. If they can do so, that will lead them to a positive and fulfilling life.

  1. UNDERSTAND: Also it’s the sub-conscious programming, which made them behave negatively. Your conscious thinking is only the tip of the ice berg; the rest 90% of the ice berg controls everything in your life, which is the sub-conscious mind.

  1. ACT: Reprogramming the sub-conscious mind is possible. For that they have to make another choice, that now-onwards they will listen, speak and see only positivity

All parents are already entrepreneurs!

Yes, every “great” parent is a great entrepreneur. And other-than-great-parents are like start-ups who failed to produce great results. That means every good or bad parents are in a way entrepreneurs. How? Before you draw any conclusion let me explain my point.
Hah? My dad is an entrepreneur?
What parents do? they “manufacture” a product named a baby child. They put some catchy name for the baby. Then they do nurture the baby. They show-off their product to the world. If the product is able to sell himself and the world welcomes him well. Then the “business” is a hit!

That means when a parent up-brings a child its similar to a business owner who nurtures his product or service. “Oh Jerin, we can't compare business with parenting, that’s ridiculous”. Wait, I didn't mean both parenting and entrepreneurship is same. Rather there is always something we can learn from parenting for entrepreneurship.

A comparison:

 Parents
Entrepreneurs

Marriage
Start a business
Love making
Product concept design
Baby
Product/Service
Up-bringing baby
Improvising product/service
Great education
Marketing
Live dreams
Selling
Success
Success

If you look for entrepreneurship lessons form other parents, your parents or even yourself as a parent you will understand that there are lot of beautiful things you can learn. The double benefit is that you can be a great parent and a great entrepreneur in the process.

You are awesome!

Oh! Come on, You are Success!

By Jerin Jacob (Author of Your Epic Year)

Success! it is one of the topic, written about and read about millions of times from the day man got the ability to comb their hair properly. Many books, articles, training materials and courses are being introduced by some beautiful people, of course they have become extremely successful selling them. Its like showing a plastic cake and taking orders and then using the same money to buy a real cake for himself.

But what is success? Even after this much information overload, everyone has their on philosophy around success. Interestingly many still become 'successful' without reading to, without listening to any 'blah, blah' stuffs.

My intention here is to help you take off your black glared sun glass you are wearing to see success. So that you can enjoy a brand new sunny day.

Okay, many say success is relative and is dependent to individual to individual. I did think that way, till the time I hear 'The Strangest Secret' by Earl Nightingale. He explains, those who have a goal to pursue for, is successful. That is, the journey towards so called 'success' itself is success. To put it in simple terms, as you have a goal to complete reading this article, and you are working towards it by keep reading. Hence you are success right now.

Then who is failure, I know one of your friend or foe is sleeping right now because of laziness and has no goal to achieve. This guy is a failure (unless his dream is, sleep like morons). Using the earlier 'reading this article' metaphor, even if that guy sees this link on his Facebook News-feed, he won't bother to click and read this. That means anyone who doesn't have any specific goal (not necessary a bigger one) to achieve, is a failure.
"So Jerin, are you saying, I am already successful and there is no need to achieve my dreams".
Not really, rather you should understand that your aim is not to become successful but to enjoy the journey towards your dreams. Not like whining, "He is success, I am not", "He has done it in his younger age, I am aged, so I won't never be successful".

But if you can live with a perspective of 'being-successful-already', your life will be more of fun and happy. You must have seen, all those lazy unproductive people, enjoy life more than you, they chill out and have fun. Because they just don't care and may say "whataaaever!". At the same time you have the greatest of vision and dream, but you just 'wait' till the day you become 'success'. Why?

You take any so called 'successful' people out there, you can see they have come a long way to live in abundance and in popularity. But the reality is, even if there were struggles in their life, they all did enjoy their journey. To be 'successful', you have to feel success right now. Not like, when you have everything you will.

At the end of the day, life is meant to live happily at every second of your life time. So treat yourself as if you are already a 'successful' person and chill out. By the way you are reading the last sentence of the article, if you had not enjoyed reading this, you wouldn't have reached here. Have fun.

“Success is not a destination, it's a journey”

Hope this concept has helped you. By the way do you know someone who really needs this to be read? If so, go ahead and share this article with that person. Sharing is caring.

As "personality" is the worst mask, then whom can you trust?

Let me start of this way “The worst mask is personality of a person”. Some of you may wonder how dare I am to write such a blunt statement. Please don't fight over it, let me explain my point.

Whenever I hear “He has got a great personalty”, or when someone says “I admire him, because what a charming personality he has got”, I have always felt these people are going in a wrong direction. Why?

Because the greatness of anything cannot be realized by looking its outside appearance. If that hasn’t been the case mankind would have never found diamonds from dark charcoals.

Personality can be referred as someone's trained behavior or an outside appearance. Basically it is the behavioral pattern of an individual with respect to different situations in life. When someone says he has got a great personality that does mean he has got a great skill to sell himself to others. His skills include effective communication skills, great body language, nice smile. He may be even very active in his communities. He may have all the luxury possessions . Having these qualities is a fantastic thing.

But most of the time these trained behaviors and external awesomeness of a person may be a mask to deceive or hide someone's real character. That means you cannot really trust someone by their humble behaviors or by their dress code.

Now you may ask,  “Jerin, then what is it, that makes a person trustworthy and admirable?” the answer is simple but many of us have forgotten this reality. Yes, a better character makes a man perfect.

You may ask “what? character isn’t a part of personality?” Not at all, personality is someone’s external behavior while character is an internal thing or the real existence of a being.

Character is the best trait of a man because outer personality rather the mask would tear down when so called great “personalities” meet some real challenges. You must have seen many well dressed and well behaved persons burst out with anger even for some petty things. At the same time you might have seen people handling the toughest things with genuine smile and humility.

Let me make it more clear by relating the concept with an old story. You must have heard/read the very popular Aesop’s tale of a rabbit and a tortoise running a race. The rabbit thought of taking rest between the race and it failed the competition because the tortoise converted the rabbit's sleeping time to it's winning time. Before the race, spectators gathered in the starting point must have definitely thought rabbit will win the race because they entrusted the “personality” of the rabbit but they never knew that the rabbit was a lazy lad inside.

So the moral of the story with respect to the topic is the character of consistency and integrity wins at the end of the day not the personality and muscle power.

Okay, now that you may want to know how you can find someone with a better character. To find someone with such greatness of character, the only way is assess the person by investing your time for a long period. The best character cannot be defined but only can be felt by someones humbleness or goodness.

On the other hand to find a person with a great personality you may need some seconds of time as it is solely based on what you see outside.

Now the big question, how can I develop a better character?
Personality mask or Personality techniques can be acquired by simply attending a personality or behavioral training program but acquiring a great character needs more effort and time.

“Yes, I know you are ready to invest your time”. “Okay, that is great but you need to understand one more thing!”. It is about the “Character Development Cycle”. Which is a very simple cyclic process behind Character Development.

#1st stage

It starts with a “thought”. If you consume a thought over and over again that very thought will reflect in your behavior.  (Thought --> Behavior)

#2nd stage

If you continue behaving in a certain way over and over again, your behavior becomes your second nature. That means that behavior becomes a part of your habit.  (Behavior --> Habit)

#3rd & final stage

Then when you keep this habit for quite a long time, the same habit will convert it your character.  (Habit --> Character)

This is the Character Development Cycle; any of your character traits have undergone this process.

If you say “I become angry easily, because it’s my character” that means you had a recurring “thought” of being in a state of anger/agitation/frustration some time ago. Then that thought had become your behavior. After that the same behavior became your habit. Then finally that habit has rooted in your character. That means it all started from a “thought of anger”.

If you want to transform your character, it’s simple, change your thoughts and consume that thought over a period of time. Research says that if you can hold a thought/behavior over a continuous period of #21 days that thought becomes rooted in your sub-conscious mind and in turn becomes your character.

That means noblest of character is neither a special blessing nor a matter of up-bringing. But someone's continues effort to consume good thoughts.

So next time when you “think” something, have a self-analysis, do I want to make this thought a part of my character.

Let us think good, talk good and live good!
